Meet Dr. Marlene Winell

Marlene has been working with “reclaimers” – people recovering from toxic religious experiences – for over 30 years. She was the first to name religious trauma and Religious Trauma Syndrome in her academic articles published in 2011. She believes that mental health professionals have a lot to learn about treating religious harm.

Dr. Winell has studied with leaders in the field of trauma treatment such as Dr. Bessel van der Kolk and Dr. Eric Gentry and takes a body-oriented approach to religious trauma recovery. Among many influences she recommends these books to other helping professionals:

  • The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk
  • Forward Facing Trauma Therapy by J. Eric Gentry
  • Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors, by Janina Fisher
  • Trauma and Recovery, by Judith Herman
  • Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving, by Pete Walker

Dr. Winell always focuses on the therapeutic relationship as holding primary importance for healing.  Other principles and important areas of knowledge  such as safety and understanding of toxic religious experience inform her practice, training, and supervision. In working with clients, she also draws from the following approaches:

  • Inner Child Work
  • Clinical Guided Imagery
  • Narrative Therapy
  • Somatic Experiencing
  • Trauma Treatment
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Psychoeducation
  • Relationship Counseling
  • Life Coaching
  • Sex Therapy
  • Expressive Arts Therapy
  • Group Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
  • Mindfulness
